THE UNITARY PLAN

The Unitary Plan is a book of rules for what can be done and built in the 4,894 square kilometre Auckland region. Recently a councillor told the “Living Wage Aotearoa” meeting in Henderson, the Unitary Plan would bring more houses, quicker and more cheaply. Only days later that same person, said publicly the Unitary Plan would not help people build more houses because of the difficulties in working through it. It is possible that both totally contradictory statements are true. This situation proves, the more complicated a set of rules, the bigger the risk of multiple interpretations. This fails to bring fairness, which is the purpose of rules in the first place. If Council likes your proposal they can make consent easy. If Council doesn't like your proposal they can make a Consent expensive and hard to obtain.

Auckland Unitary Plan is 6961 pages long (give or take a page or two for amendments). Presuming each page is printed on both sides, this is the size of the document.
