Ethnic Board Public Meeting
The public meeting at Kelston Community Centre held by the Ethnic Board last night, to meet the candidate’s, was another reminder of how the public are not kept informed of these events. I only found out 2 hours before the meeting! The community has been voicing their concern on Social Media that they did not know that there were Candidates Meetings held in their area and that they would have liked to go along and hear what was being said and to meet the candidates. Every meet the candidates meeting I have attended, the candidates addressing the meeting outnumber the public. Last night was an exceptional example of this, in this photo you can see the majority of the 27 candidates who had come to speak. I’m not in the photo because I’m taking it and there are a couple of candidates out of shot. In this photo, three of the eight audience, shown (the people with their backs to the camera) are organisers of the event.
Like many people I have always held an opinion on local issues and Council involvement but since stepping forward as a candidate in 2013 and now again in 2016 I have been appalled at some of the stuff I’ve discovered. I am astonished at how Ratepayers money is spent. In many cases I believe it is distributed unfairly and in most cases I believe we are not achieving what we should for the amount spent. But how do you get this message out; Its really great to have social media to get your information out to the wider general public because it’s pointless going to meet the candidate meetings when the general public don’t know about the meetings!
